About Philips Lifeline

Developed by gerontologist Andrew Dibner in 1972, Philips Lifeline was the first company to offer personal alert services in North America. Over time, the company transitioned from privately distributing to hospitals and other healthcare organizations to selling their devices publicly in 1983.

Today, Philips Lifeline offers a full range of alert systems for both at-home and on-the-go use. The company is also always working on new and improved devices. The AgingWell Hub was opened by Philips Lifeline in 2015 as a space for researching original solutions for seniors. Their most recent release, GoSafe 2, was released in 2017.

The Philips Lifeline Response Centers operate 24/7, 365 day a year. The centers supports multiple languages with care specialists trained in HIPAA compliance. Additionally, the centers are based in the United States and Canada to best serve Philips Lifeline subscribers.

Features

This in-home system includes AutoAlert, a feature that automatically detects falls to get help to seniors quickly, even when they’re unable to push the help button.

To develop AutoAlert, Philips conducted extensive research into how seniors move. Thousands of hours of data was accumulated to create an ultra-accurate sensor for senior falls, which features these key elements:

Accelerometers

Accelerometers help detect the high acceleration force of a fall.

Barometric Sensors

These help detect the slight different in barometric pressure between standing and lying on the ground.

Fall Detection Algorithm

An algorithm designed to discern real falls and false alarms.

Same Features as the HomeSage Standard

In addition to AutoAlert, this system includes all of the features of the HomeSafe Standard option, including a choice of wristband or pendant, two-way communication, a personalized response plan, and your choice of a landline or cellular connection.

Final Thoughts

After reviewing the specifics of Philips Lifeline systems, it’s clear that the brand offers a handful of great benefits. We’re particularly impressed with the GoSafe 2 system, which gives seniors access to help at all times with the use of a single, compact, and wearable device. We also like that Philips Lifeline gives you the ability to create a personalized response plan. Not all accidents require the help of emergency services – you can opt to receive the help of a friend, family member, or caregiver instead.

While Philips Lifeline is a well-established personal alert provider, it undoubtedly has some shortcomings. For one, their systems don’t offer caregiver tracking services, which is an important feature for many seniors and their loved ones. Also, Philips Lifeline isn’t priced competitively when compared to other top alert system providers. Their monthly charge is fairly steep, especially if you opt to add on automatic fall detection.

Philips Lifeline isn’t our top recommendation among medical alert systems available today. But, this company is noteworthy for its development of sleek, new alert system designs like the GoSafe 2.
